HISTORY OF MIDALIA STEEL

In August 1951 Roy & Leon Midalia set up shop as Midalia Bros with £92 of capital, a 6m x 12m shed which they leased from the W.A. Government Railways and one truck which they used for the collection of scrap steel and cast iron.Shortly after, they were joined by brother-in-law Yitz Benn and the company changed its name to Midalia & Benn.

During the next few years they travelled the South West purchasing scrap metal, much of which they cut on site.  Other revenue came from removing damaged railway line, scrapping locomotives, collecting copper and brass and removing scrap machinery from a mine in Marble Bar.  Midalia & Benn were famous for their prowess in removal of railway lines, removing hundreds of kilometres in the South West.In 1961 they won the contract to remove two navy guns, weighing 250 tonnes each from Garden Island.

By 1966 the company had extended its operation to the collection of scrap steel and rail throughout the entire State and moved into the Wheatbelt winning contracts for the removal and collection of over 1000km of and 42,000 tonnes of wheat rail.  Midalia & Benn then sold it to farmers for fence strainer posts and building sheds.

By now the company had a sizeable export business operating. A branch was also established in Adelaide. The company now became the plum of all Australian scrap contracts.Back in W.A. Midalia & Benn continued to grow and diversify.  A machinery division was set up in Redcliffe - the first machinery stockist in W.A.

At the Subiaco premises, other items were added for sale - second hand anchor chains were brought in for land clearing, small sizes of pipe and RHS were also stocked. This saw the emergence of a new steel division in 1964.This was also the year Midalia & Benn became one of the original founders of the Dowerin Field Days.  The commitment to this was in recognition of the importance of the rural community to the company.

Now selling used and new steel, the Subiaco premises soon became too small, so land was purchased in Welshpool, and an office and warehouse built.  In 1971 Pipe & Steel Sales was born!  By now, the company was exporting scrap steel from all states and in this year it saw the first ever export of steel to Mainland China.

In 1972, Roy's son Geoff joined his father in the business, serving a hard line apprenticeship in all facets of the business for the next few years. The new steel business successively known as Midalia & Benn Pty Ltd, Midmetals Pty Ltd, Pipe & Steel Sales Pty Ltd and finally Midalia Steel Pty Ltd grew immensely with Geoff Midalia as the Managing Director.

In 1999 Geoff Midalia initiated the introduction of an advertising agency to further fuel the growth of Midalia Steel.  By introducing a structured advertising and promotional plan, Geoff and the advertising agency were able to stimulate huge growth driven by the now well recognised ‘Bruce' the cattle-dog and mmMate!

In 2003 Midalia Steel Pty Ltd was acquired by Onesteel Limited who saw the business as an asset to their large portfolio, and a way into the small to medium retail, trade and rural markets. Onesteel allowed Midalia Steel to continue on with the successful ‘Midalia' formula, but also introduced improvements in safety and other resources.

Midalia Steel is now stronger than ever, and continuing to grow. We acknowledge the strong heritage this company has grown from, and strive to continue the legacy of the Midalia family in providing innovation, product diversification and commitment to the rural and metropolitan customer base.
